Mel Gibson: On the Record
During a 2006 DUI arrest, Mel Gibson made an undisputed antisemitic statement and later apologized. A separate 1995 remark alleged by Winona Ryder is disputed by Gibson’s representative.
On the record
- July 2006 — During a DUI arrest said “The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world,” for which he apologized at the time. [JTA]
- Alleged, 1995 — Winona Ryder alleged he asked her at a party whether she was an “oven dodger”; Gibson’s representative flatly denies this as “100% untrue.” [The Forward]
The context
The 2006 tirade is documented and he apologized for it. The “oven dodger” line is an allegation by Ryder that Gibson’s side denies. We label each accordingly.
Where Galil stands
Our opinion: “The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world” came out of his own mouth. We don’t stand with him.
