• March 30, 2001: On or about March 30, 2001 (reported by The Tufts Daily on March 31, 2001), author/journalist Israel Shamir, speaking at Tufts University during the Arab Student Association's Arab Awareness Week, described Israelis in dehumanizing biological terms, telling the audience "Israeli people represent a virus form of a human being because they can live anywhere," while characterizing Palestinians as "perfect mammals" rooted to the land. Our opinion: We don't stand behind rhetoric that reduces a people to a "virus" — dehumanizing language like that has no place here, whatever political wrapper it's given.
