Ilhan Omar: Where She Stands on Israel

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has a long record of endorsing the boycott of Israel and of remarks widely condemned as antisemitic tropes.

On the record

  • 2012 — Tweeted “Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel.” [Times of Israel]
  • February 2019 — Tweeted “It’s all about the Benjamins baby” about pro-Israel campaign money, naming “AIPAC!” when asked who was paying members of Congress; House Democratic leaders called it an antisemitic money trope. [CNN]
  • 2019 — Endorsed BDS and voted against H.Res.246, the resolution condemning the movement. [The Forward]

The context

Omar apologized “unequivocally” for the 2019 tweet the next day, deleted the posts, and said she was learning “the painful history of anti-Semitic tropes,” while maintaining her criticism of AIPAC lobbying. We include that for accuracy.

Where Galil stands

Our opinion: Two of the most infamous antisemitic-trope tweets in modern American politics, plus an endorsement of the boycott of Israel. She apologized for the wording; the record is the record. We don’t stand with her.
