• September 2025 — More than 1,300 filmmakers, actors, and industry professionals pledged not to “screen films, appear at or otherwise work with Israeli film institutions… that are implicated in genocide and apartheid.” Reported signatories include Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Joaquin Phoenix, Javier Bardem, Gael García Bernal, Elliot Page, Susan Sarandon, Olivia Colman, Cynthia Nixon, Ava DuVernay, Ayo Edebiri, Ilana Glazer, Brian Cox, Alyssa Milano, and Aimee Lou Wood. The context

The pledge’s organizers state it targets Israeli film institutions, not Jewish people or individual artists; a counter-letter signed by more than 1,200 industry figures opposed it. We include both.

Our opinion: Some of the most famous names in film singled out the Jewish state’s institutions — and only that state’s — for a blacklist. We don’t stand with the pledge, or with signing it.
