Abby Martin: Where They Stand on Israel

This page records specific public conduct. It does not claim knowledge of private beliefs or motives.

Documented record

  • May 21, 2021: In 2019, journalist/filmmaker Abby Martin, invited as keynote speaker for a Georgia Southern University critical-media-literacy conference, declined to sign a state-mandated contractual certification that she was not engaged in and would not engage in a boycott of Israel — forfeiting her honorarium and causing the conference to be canceled — then sued with CAIR's backing, and on May 21, 2021 a federal judge (Martin v. Wrigley, 540 F. Supp. 3d 1220, N.D. Ga.) ruled Georgia's anti-BDS certification requirement unconstitutional. Source 1 Source 2

Context and response

The legal fight was publicly framed and litigated as a free-speech/compelled-speech case rather than an antisemitism case; the court's ruling addressed compelled-speech doctrine, not the merits of BDS. No antisemitic statement by Martin herself was found in the sources reviewed.

Where Galil stands

Our opinion: We don't pour for someone who won't even promise not to boycott the Jewish state — Galil stands with those willing to say plainly they reject boycotting Israel.
